Work Summary

As the Product Experience Intern at Buildium, I was responsible for supporting projects with user research and associated activities as needed. I worked primarily in the discovery and validation phases of the UX design process. I analyzed user data to determine growth areas for the product, validated user flows that were being built or redesigned, and created reports to guide the designers in preparation for future Agile sprints. When not working on a specific project, I had a slew of ongoing work that I contributed to (including the moderation of customer suggestions and comments submitted through UserVoice). I evangelized research as an important part of the UX design process while leveraging my background as a video editor; I achieved this goal by curating recordings of user testing that my colleagues conducted.

To give a better idea of the breadth of work I contributed, I’m providing brief summaries of three projects I worked on. In the coming days, I will be expanding these to further encompass the work I did. As such, these summaries are currently incomplete; I will be adding pictures and documentation as the projects progress.

Renters Insurance Redesign Testing

  • Tested with InVision

  • Co-wrote script with designers (based on research goals)

  • Guerilla testing – recruited people and tested with them in-person

  • Testing revealed difficulty in completing early tasks

  • The team’s UX copywriter took a more playful approach to the text – participants liked this approach

  • Simultaneously moderated + took notes

  • Cleaned up notes and presented findings to the designers

  • My testing proved that the redesigns were working as intended – adoption was way up compared to the old version of RI!

Buildium allows property managers to require renters insurance when signing a lease. Residents may choose to sign up directly through Buildium’s insurance partner; this company has been replaced with a different organization, providing an opportunity for the Product team to rethink how renters sign up for insurance.

2000+ Customer Requests

  • Sourced from Salesforce requests (extracted via Domo)

  • Identified three major themes: Automation, increased granularity/clarity in existing features, integration with other tools (e.g. APIs)

  • Corroborated findings with prior research

Next steps: Find a wider variety of sources; encourage 2000+ customers to have a forum/dialogue

Property managers that manage over 2000 units are an important group for Buildium to understand; the company regularly organizes site visits with customers to understand how they use Buildium and what is preventing them from more efficiently using the product.

All Property Management – Discovery

  • Co-wrote survey with designers and other product stakeholders

  • Brought survey into Surveygizmo; implemented logic systems as needed

  • Findings TBD – this project has been pushed back

All Property Management (APM) is a search tool for property managers seeking new clients. APM was purchased by Buildium in 2015. The goal of this project is to integrate the two more effectively in a way that makes sense to property managers.
